Door Installation in Vallejo, CA

Interior, entry, patio and shower doors hung square with clean trim.

What to know about door installation

A door looks simple and installs badly more often than almost anything else in a house. If the frame is out of plumb by a few millimeters, the door rubs, the latch misses or the gap along the top tapers. Getting a door to swing and close correctly is a matter of measuring, shimming and adjusting in the right order.

E&MC Remodeling installs interior doors, exterior doors, patio or sliding doors and glass shower doors. Each type has its own requirements: an exterior door must be flashed against water, a patio door has to be set level on a sill, and a shower door must be supported by walls that can carry the glass.

Because doors connect to flooring, trim and paint, we handle them as part of the larger project when possible, so the finished edge matches the rest of the room.

Hardware and weatherstripping finish the job. A new exterior door should seal against the threshold and the jamb with weatherstripping that compresses evenly, and the deadbolt should line up with the strike plate without forcing the door. On interior doors, we set hinges so the door swings freely and stays where you leave it, instead of drifting open or shut.

Signs a door needs to be replaced or rehung

  • A door that sticks, rubs or will not stay latched.
  • Daylight visible around the frame or a draft at the threshold.
  • Rot or soft spots at the bottom of an exterior door.
  • A sliding door that jumps off its track or will not lock.
  • A remodel that adds, widens or moves a door opening.

How we install a door

  1. Measure the opening

We check the width, height, depth and plumb of the opening before ordering.

  2. Prepare and flash

The sill and sides are prepared, and exterior doors are flashed so water drains away.

  3. Hang and adjust

The door is set, shimmed, fastened and adjusted until the gaps are even and the latch lines up.

  4. Trim and finish

Casing, hardware and caulk are installed, and the edges are painted or touched up.

What affects the cost of door installation

Door installation pricing depends on the door and the opening. The main factors:

Door type

Interior, exterior, sliding and glass doors differ in hardware, flashing and installation time.

New opening versus replacement

Cutting or widening an opening involves framing and sometimes a header, which adds work.

Frame and sill condition

Rotted frames or sills must be repaired before a new door can sit correctly.

Trim and finish

Custom casing, painting and hardware add time and materials.

Why choose E&MC Remodeling for door installation

Door Installation FAQs

Do you install both interior and exterior doors?

Yes, along with patio and sliding doors and glass shower doors.

Can you install a door in a new opening?

Yes. We frame the opening, install a header where needed and hang the door. Structural work may need a permit.

Why does my new door stick?

Usually the frame is out of plumb or the floor has shifted. Proper shimming at installation prevents it.

Do you handle the trim and paint?

Yes. Casing, hardware and paint touch-up are part of a finished installation.

How long does door installation take?

A single door often takes part of a day. New openings and exterior doors take longer because of framing and flashing.
